HERO: Hyper Evolved Reproductive Organ

Inspired by the amazing ability of women to create and sustain life, this hybridized vessel represents the reproductive organs unique to women.  The womb, placenta, umbilical cord, ovaries, fallopian tubes, vagina and breasts are all organs that exist or are produced by the woman’s body to create, grow, and nurture life.  The vagina and breasts are normally the only reproductive organs seen on the outside of the female form and are often highly sexualised.  In this vessel they have been put back into context, surrounded or encased with other organs that ultimately serve the same purpose but have no sexual connotations.

The model is cast in three different ways:   HERO, the heavy iron sculpture with its impurities may signify both the burden of carrying a child, and the aging organ. HERO II sits in a box, a thin white brittle sculpture which is illuminated by lights from inside to signify the potential life within the vessel. The purity of the white sculpture can be juxtaposed with the first piece which incorporated iron powder in the casting process.  The heavy iron sculpture takes on the properties of the metal and can be viewed in contrast to the purity of the light white sculpture.  The display of these two sculptures also highlights themes about youth and age, the white is protected within a box and serves a useful purpose as a light, whereas the solid weathered relic sits uncovered and un-useful. Finally a semi-transparent sculpture of the HERO III sits in an apothecary jar, as if to signify something one may find in a museum; an experiment.
